Not too long ago, in the 1990s and 2000s, the health care system’s best solution for chronic pain was an opioid prescription. Today, of course, we know that opioids are highly addictive and deadly, only to be used as pain relief in moderation with careful oversight.

Still, even after more than a decade of trying to curb opioid use, overdose deaths continue to ravage the country, with each year’s death count higher than the last. In a single 12-month period ending in April 2021, more than 75,000 people were estimated to have died from opioid overdoses – nearly 20,000 more deaths than the previous year.

Clearly, the nation’s strategies to lessen opioid-related deaths are not working. Even though opioids are off the table in many instances, people still experience pain. So how do we address pain management effectively with little or no opioids?

One solution is digital health, an effective – though underutilized – tool for pain management. In my role as a chief clinical officer of a virtual physical therapy platform, I get to see firsthand how solutions like these can help reduce opioid reliance and regain mobility.

Modern Healthcare: MSU Health Care launches virtual physical therapy program

MSU Health Care is launching a virtual physical therapy program for rural patients, the East Lansing, Michigan-based academic medical center said Tuesday. 

MSU Health Care will work with Walnut Creek, California-headquartered startup RecoveryOne on the virtual musculoskeletal program, which will be administered in conjunction with the health system’s in-person rehabilitation services. RecoveryOne clinicians will provide virtual care under the MSU branding, while the health system’s clinicians will work with patients in person.

“Physical therapy is one of the top reasons people go to a doctor … so it’s a natural fit in terms of where we can make an impact at scale while improving access to care,” said MSU Health Care Chief Innovation and Digital Health Officer Roger Jansen.

Innovative collaboration expands access to rehabilitation services with virtual physical therapy

MSK diseases, such as joint, neck and back pain, affect one out of two Americans and three out of four people over the age of 65. Furthermore, individuals suffering from MSK conditions are four times more likely to report depression and anxiety. Through this collaboration, patients in Michigan will have more options and flexibility to access physical therapy services to fully recover from their MSK conditions. 

For example, nearly 20% of the state’s population lives in a rural area and long drives to clinics can be a barrier to recovery, especially when mobility is limited for older Americans. Other individuals may not be able to access traditional medical services due to family or work obligations. In many cases, individuals do not require full in-person services to recover and will find it more convenient to receive treatment virtually. MSU Health Care aims to meet patients where they are from the convenience and comfort of home. In addition, by enabling patients to stay within the MSU Health Care system to receive their care through virtual services, providers will be able to better coordinate care and treatment plans, which can prevent unnecessary and costly surgeries. 

“This innovative collaboration will expand physical therapy to our current patients who may not be able to seek care on site due to geographic or other barriers to care. Our musculoskeletal services within our primary care, neurology, rehabilitation, physical therapy, imaging and osteopathic manipulation will benefit from this additional modality,” said Roger Jansen, Chief Innovation Officer of MSU Health Care. “We can evaluate the patient and direct them to either the in-person clinic or virtual therapy. As the Vice President of Clinical Operations, Sean was instrumental in constructing an independent medical advisory board of orthopedic physicians and specialists to advise on clinical policy, establishing partnerships with academic research centers of excellence to generate peer-reviewed evidence, and developing clinical procedures and protocols to create the more than 200 rehabilitation pathways and 2000 therapeutic exercises on the platform.

As Chief Financial Officer, John Araki will lead strategic accounting and finance, corporate performance management, and also play a key role in evaluating strategic initiatives and corporate development opportunities. Additionally, John will continue to manage operational functions such as compliance and human resources to meet the needs of the company as it grows. In the last two years, John has seen the company through debt and equity financing activities, including its Series C funding round and HITRUST certification, a rigorous process that demonstrates the company’s ability to meet key regulations and protect sensitive information.

No Need to Wear a Sensor with RecoveryOne’s New Motion Trainer

Company enhances virtual physical therapy via computer vision and AI technology

Motion Trainer is a new tracking capability that empowers an individual to achieve faster, stronger and more efficacious recovery by providing real-time feedback and form correction without the use of a wearable sensor. While wearable sensors can be beneficial, in virtual physical therapy, they can introduce unnecessary challenges, including low adoption rates that can affect adherence and increase costs because of added equipment. Motion Trainer uses the device’s built-in camera and an app or browser-based device, such as a laptop, eliminating the need to strap on devices or incur additional costs for extra hardware while making it simple to engage.
