RecoveryOne Expands Executive Team to Accelerate Growth in Employer Market

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., February 16, 2022 /PRNewswire/RecoveryOne, a leading digital health innovator dedicated to improving health outcomes for recovery from musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries of all types and reducing costs, today announced the appointment of two sales leaders, Dustin Armitage and Matt Cervi.  Both executives bring their expertise within the self-insured employer market to expedite sales and influence product and growth strategy.

“With the massive increase in demand for virtual MSK solutions, we continue to expand our team to further empower more individuals with access to a lower cost, clinically-validated solution,” said Brian Harrigan, EVP, employer sales and client success of RecoveryOne. “The addition of tenured sales talent will enhance our efforts to ensure employees gain access to RecoveryOne’s solution via their employers, thereby providing them with the ability to recover from pain affordably, and on their schedule. In turn, we hope to see a reduction in absenteeism and an increase in recovery.”

Dustin Armitage, vice president, sales, will leverage his more than 13 years of combined sales experience driving strategic opportunities and initiatives with health plan partners and large employers at such companies as Sapphire Digital (acquired by Zelis) Welltok (acquired by Virgin Pulse), and Ovia Health.   “I have dedicated my career to helping people live better lives, and after evaluating multiple solutions to achieve this, it was evident RecoveryOne is the solution I want to help bring to market,” said Armitage. “I am thrilled to be joining a team with exceptional people, culture and a crucial mission to provide access to a full-body virtual MSK solution to achieve better health outcomes.”

As Vice President, Sales, Matt Cervi will collaborate with self-insured employers to help drive utilization of the RecoveryOne solution. Previously, Cervi was at DayTwo, a Diabetes solution provider, where he expanded US market share through growth channels including health plans and health systems. Prior to DayTwo, Cervi was vice president, business development at Healthstat Inc., where he drove national sales within the Primary Care and Occupational Care Clinic Market, focusing on the customers’ needs as they pertained to wellness programs and chronic disease management, among others. “My mission has always been to help others understand the complexities of healthcare and how to solve for a constantly evolving space,” said Cervi.  “I look forward to bringing this passion to RecoveryOne while keeping top of mind the importance of individual experiences and how there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to recovery.”

Musculoskeletal diseases, such as back, knee and neck injuries, affect one out of two individuals in the U.S. The associated absenteeism and lost productivity due to painful MSK conditions results in an annual cost of around $600 billion, more than heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. In today’s competitive job market, more employers are adding wellness benefits to help with retention. RecoveryOne enables employees to access care when it’s convenient for them and includes customized care plans as well as access to behavioral health coaches to help keep employees engaged until they are fully recovered.

RecoveryOne offers a human-first approach, recognizing that no two people recover the same. Unlike competitors, the company has 200+ clinically-validated treatment pathways and 2,000+ therapeutic exercises that collectively address the entire body, providing the industry’s only complete full-body virtual MSK solution. With the addition of Armitage and Cervi, RecoveryOne will continue expanding its market share and support consumer success by providing a lower cost, more accessible and complete solution than others in this market.

RecoveryOne’s Virtual Physical Therapy and Musculoskeletal Solution Now Available to Select Cigna Medicare Advantage Customers as In-Network Benefit

Cigna Medicare Advantage virtual physical therapy

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., January 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/RecoveryOne, a leading digital health innovator dedicated to improving health outcomes for recovery from musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries of all types and reducing costs, today announced it has expanded its collaboration with Cigna to offer virtual physical therapy and a broad MSK solution for Medicare Advantage (MA) customers.

Cigna MA customers within the Tennessee market, which includes plans in North Mississippi, Virginia and North Georgia, can now access RecoveryOne’s virtual solution to help treat MSK conditions and injuries as an in-network benefit.

“Our solution covers the majority of MSK conditions from head to toe, and with experience that spans more than eight years of working with older populations,” said Mark Luck Olson, CEO of RecoveryOne. “As such, the solution is uniquely qualified to address some of the most common and complex conditions including total joint procedures, fractures from falls and low back pain which is the most burdensome of all MSK conditions.”

Musculoskeletal diseases affect nearly three out of four people age 65 and over in the United States, with the most common MSK ailments being degenerative joint changes, such as osteoarthritis within the spine, hip and knee, and fall-related injuries. In fact, a recent study revealed that $45 billion was spent by public insurance, such as Medicare, from 1996-2016 on MSK disorders with low back and neck pain. As the U.S. population continues to expand and as MSK costs escalate each year, it is critical to detect and treat MSK conditions to help older adults stay healthy.

“We are proud to expand our partnership with Cigna to improve the overall quality of life, including pain reduction and a return to previous functionality for the Medicare Advantage population,” said Dustin Eggers, EVP and chief commercial officer of RecoveryOne. “We look forward to offering the RecoveryOne platform to additional markets in the New Year.”

With a national shortage of physical therapists and growing demand, as well as seniors being isolated at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual MSK solutions are more important than ever. RecoveryOne’s platform and clinical programs are specifically designed to offer on-demand evaluations and physical therapy, personalized recovery plans and behavioral support to help drive clinical success.

“Our Medicare Advantage customers are seeking accessible, easy-to-use and proven virtual care solutions,” said Dr. Michael Reardon, whose duties currently include leading clinical operations for Cigna’s Medicare business. “By working with RecoveryOne, we are able to offer much needed, cost-effective care that addresses some of the most troublesome musculoskeletal conditions, such as low back pain and osteoarthritis that customers can access from the privacy and comfort of their own home.”

RecoveryOne’s offering is:

  • Accessible and scalable: Empowering Medicare Advantage customers to receive personalized treatment from the comfort of their homes on their terms. The program is designed to minimize equipment and utilize one’s own body weight or everyday household items, saving travel to gyms and the costs of expensive gym equipment.
  • Cost-effective: RecoveryOne’s focus is to increase utilization and lower costs while maintaining a high-quality customer experience and helping improve health outcomes. Based on national claims data from more than 350,000 members, RecoveryOne reduced the total medical cost by $751 per member per month for MSK-related diagnoses.  Additionally, the analysis found RecoveryOne reduced costs by nearly 77% for low back pain and 84% for rotator cuff tears.
  • Evidence-based:  RecoveryOne was founded by a preeminent orthopedic surgeon, and clinical rigor remains key to the only full-body, virtual solution supported by 200+ proprietary clinical pathways and 2,000+ therapeutic exercises.

RecoveryOne and Cigna have had a longstanding relationship, including an investment by Cigna Ventures in January 2020. In addition, RecoveryOne’s MSK solution is currently available to Cigna’s employer clients with under 500 employees, making Cigna the first health plan to pilot and rollout the use of RecoveryOne as a consumer tool. This solution is included on Express Scripts’ Digital Health Formulary

Her other experience includes launching new products from idea to implementation and expanding products into new markets.

“I’m passionate about solving healthcare problems, understanding what consumers need, and then developing the technology that can help improve health,” said Hager. “At RecoveryOne, product innovation includes the whole ecosystem of care from consumers who have diverse needs to the behavioral health coaches that can motivate members.  Innovating in this environment is an exciting opportunity.”

RecoveryOne and Cigna Team Up to Provide Virtual Physical Therapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions

Solution is now available to nearly two million Cigna customers working in small and mid-size companies

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., June 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — RecoveryOne, a leading innovator in evidence-based solutions that personalize and improve the path to recovery from musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, today announced a virtual physical therapy solution targeting musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions and injuries is now available to nearly two million Cigna customers. This MSK Solution, available to Cigna’s employer clients with under 500 employees effective immediately, makes it easier for customers to access physical therapy evaluations, personalized recovery plans and personal behavior support coaching to maximize engagement. Cigna is the first health plan to pilot and rollout the use of RecoveryOne as a consumer tool. Further, this represents the first virtual MSK-related program offered by any U.S. health plan as a standard solution that is designed to improve the cost and quality of care at scale.

With the launch of this solution, RecoveryOne and Cigna deliver differentiated value that aligns with both companies’ commitment to harness virtual options to change the way customers and patients interact with the healthcare system, including their providers. RecoveryOne is the only full-body, virtual solution supported by 200+ proprietary clinical pathways. The company’s proprietary, claims data-driven approach to identifying, enrolling, and engaging members with MSK needs targets and accelerates improved outcomes, empowering more people to reach the best recovery possible for their MSK condition.

“Cigna customers want access to quality care, when and where they need it – and that is what the RecoveryOne virtual physical therapy solution offers,” says Bruce Grimm, Senior Vice President, Cigna, who leads the company’s small and mid-size book of business. “At Cigna, we are committed to pursuing innovative opportunities like this one with RecoveryOne MSK that helps us deliver on our mission to deliver more affordable, predictable and simple health care to those we serve.”

Employers can help the millions of U.S. workers experiencing chronic pain

Cigna and RecoveryOne Offer Virtual, Personalized Support

Fifty million Americans live with chronic pain and almost 40% of these individuals report experiencing high-impact chronic pain that interferes with daily life or work activities. With these numbers on the rise year-over-year [PDF], Cigna is focused on finding solutions that identify at-risk individuals and intervene early.

Two Cigna experts on chronic pain, Dr. David Mino, national medical director of orthopedic surgery and spinal disorders, and Shawna Dodds, vice president of product development, discuss how employers can better support employees to overcome musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. MSK conditions are those impacting the bones, joints, nerves and muscles.

1. What challenges exist when it comes to MSK care, and how is Cigna approaching solutions to help address those challenges?

Dr. David Mino: With the prevalence of MSK conditions on the rise over the past two decades – especially for those ages 45 to 64 – it is important to identify individuals at risk, intervene early and change the course of this rising trend.

From an employer perspective, workers with MSK conditions lose an average of 10 days of work and have more lost work days than those with any other major health condition.

We also know that individuals with acute and chronic pain experience significant challenges in obtaining adequate care, resulting in profound physical, emotional and societal costs. MSK conditions are often accompanied by weight issues, depression and anxiety, which can exacerbate pain. Depression increases the severity and intensity of pain, and chronic musculoskeletal pain increases the risk for depression..

At Cigna, we take a proactive approach to help people get the care they need. We are creating an evidence-based path, and have developed workflows that help deliver better health outcomes and decrease the costs and risks related to a fragmented approach to managing chronic pain.

2. What Cigna programs help employers keep their employees healthy and keep MSK costs down?

Shawna Dodds: Our approach begins before an acute injury occurs and stays with people throughout their health journey. We use predictive analytics to identify customers at risk of hip, knee and back surgery up to a year in advance. Through new virtual and digital physical therapy programs and bundled payments we are able to help people get healthy and keep costs down. Along the way, our clinical and customer service teams help direct customers to the right care at the right time, connecting the full breadth of our capabilities to help eliminate fragmentation and curate seamless care delivery. We know health care can be challenging to navigate but our team helps take the challenge out, allowing customers to focus on their care.

Helping people manage pain effectively can also help reduce inappropriate opioid use. We support those predicted to be at risk through integrated pain management approaches, coordination of care and use of cognitive behavioral therapy.

3. Cigna recently teamed up with RecoveryOne, a digital MSK program. Can you share more on that recent collaboration and plans for the future?

Dodds: Only one in 10 people whose health could benefit from physical therapy actually get it – cost, inconvenience and lack of local availability puts this type of care out of reach for many. To help address that, Cigna Ventures began investing in RecoveryOne, a digital MSK program, in May of 2019.

RecoveryOne has traditionally worked with health care providers who prescribe a program via a doctor portal, which allows the doctor to monitor and update care plans for each patient. Cigna is the first health plan to pilot and rollout the use of RecoveryOne as a consumer tool. We are currently in pilot with a group of large Cigna Medical clients and as of May 1, 2021 expanded RecoveryOne to include even more clients. In addition to reaching more customers, we are also enhancing the service to include video consultation with licensed physical therapists.

Why is this important? RecoveryOne’s digital MSK solution aligns with our work to make health care more affordable, predictable, and simple for our clients and customers. The solution is designed to drive earlier clinical intervention and save costs over the long term.  Members in the pilot have experienced 35% to 40% improvements in pain and 7% to 8% improvements in functional outcomes. It’s also affordable ($0 out-of-pocket cost for customers), convenient, comprehensive, and personalized. RecoveryOne combines the power of digital with human touch by connecting people to one of 200 evidence-based care programs for MSK conditions and supporting them along their journey. The solution covers the whole person and can be accessed anytime, anywhere on nearly any device. They also plan to make this available in Spanish in 2022. With this approach, RecoveryOne addresses the significant gap between actual and desired outcomes achieved through traditional care.

4. How does virtual access play a role in helping us better serve our customers and clients?

Dr. Mino: Our goal is to create a comprehensive solution that helps our customers throughout the MSK journey, and virtual programs will allow us to create a more comprehensive approach to help our customers at a specific point in time – whether it’s the start of pain or recovery from major surgery.

With the recent dramatic and permanent shift in how we access care, and the increased desire for alternative care delivery options, we believe there is an opportunity for our virtual care partners to create a better, more simple, more affordable and more connected experience — empowering whole person health and advocating for people along the care journey.

Customers expect more convenient care interactions, and COVID-19 has rapidly accelerated this need.  Cigna is ready to answer this call.

Through the Power of One initiative, RecoveryOne aims to relieve physical pain and improve mobility for people with MSK conditions. Rather than simplistic two-way video visits, RecoveryOne offers a fully integrated, evidence-based recovery program with therapists and coaches who provide support every step of the way. Employers and health plans will be able to make RecoveryOne’s easy-to-use digital solution available to their employees and members at no cost, getting people back to their lives and work as quickly as possible.

“We are living through a unique and challenging moment in history,” continued Olson. “The idea behind the “Power of One” initiative is that it acknowledges and honors the vital individual contributions that workers make each day. We are here to help employers and health plans keep their people healthy and engaged so they can persevere through the health crisis. The only way we can get through this is to support each other.”
